Motherhood, Disenchanted
Poems for the tender mother's soul
Becoming a new mother for the first time, my heart cracked wide open. I felt raw love, but raw anger too. I felt an intense need to care for the human being I had just birthed, above caring for myself or my marriage. Motherhood is a journey unlike any other, one that I coped with by spilling words onto paper: typing one-handed in the dark womb of a nursery, scrawling desperately from the floor of the bathroom, or contently in piles of blankets on the couch.

There is a certain amount of losing one's self that women must undergo to become a mother. It is a sacred right of passage, it is messy, it is all-consuming. This is the journey I am sharing with you. This is motherhood, disenchanted.
